USE OF CUSTOM SOFTWARE - FAX V1.00

----------------------------------

1. INTRODUCTION:

----------------

The purpose of the custom software is to make the X900 emulate the line

and exchange parts of the sending and receiving of faxes via the PSTN network

including the on/off hook transitions, dial tones, dialling and line

driving/receiving phases of a fax message. Please note that only MF dialling

is supported by this software.

2. EQUIPMENT CONNECTION:

------------------------

a. Connect EXTERNAL to SLAVE on the X900 front panel using a

straight-through cable.

b. Connect unit under test ('UUT') to MASTER 1 on X900 front panel.

c. Connect reference unit ('REF') to MASTER 2 on X900 front panel.

3. SENDING AND RECEIVING FAXES:

-------------------------------

Having downloaded the custom software together with version 3.34 of the

X900 standard software to the X900, the fax tests may be accessed by

selecting option '1. General Operational Tests' from the main menu followed

by option '8. Customised Tests'.

To send a fax from the unit under test to the reference unit select

option 1. The following sequence of events will then take place:

(i). Prompt for correct cabling and connections.

(ii). The X900 waits for the UUT to go off-hook. If the UUT does not

go off-hook within ten seconds, the test finishes with an

appropriate information message.

(iii). Once the UUT is off-hook, the X900 sends a dial tone to it.

(iv). The X900 waits for the UUT to dial and disables the dial tone

once dialling starts. The X900 simply detects the presence of

dialling - no particular number is required to be dialled.

(v). The X900 assumes that dialling has finished if no MF tones are

detected from the UUT for about two seconds. It then rings the

REF unit.

(vi). The REF unit is required to answer within a user-programmable

number of rings. If it does not answer in time, an appropriate

information message is output and the test finishes.

(vii). If REF answers in time, establish UUT to REF connection so UUT

can send a fax to REF.

(viii). The test is finished when UUT goes on-hook after finishing fax

transmission.

To run this test from an autotest sequence, use the word 'SEND-FAX'.

To receive a fax at the unit under test from the reference unit, select

option 2. The ensuing sequence of events is similar to that given above

for sending faxes but with the roles of UUT and REF reversed.

In brief:

(i). Prompt for correct cabling and connections.

(ii). Detect REF off-hook within timeout.

(iii). Dial tone to REF if off-hook.

(iv). Detect dialling on slave REF.

(v). Disable dial tone to slave REF if dialling detected.

(vi). Ring UUT.

(vii). If UUT answered, connect UUT and REF. UUT receives fax.

(viii). Terminate session when REF goes on-hook.

To run this test from an autotest sequence, use the word 'RECEIVE-FAX'

4. SETTING UP DIAL TONE AND RINGING PARAMETERS:

-----------------------------------------------

It is possible to set the dial tone and ringing characteristics for

the REF unit separately from the UUT. The UUT gets its settings for these

parameters from the standard test spec.

To alter the REF settings starting from the main menu, enter '4. System

Set-up menu', enter system password, '4. Setup Tests Menu', '8. Customised

Tests' at which point the necessary menus will appear.
