X-600 ADSL Artificial Line

The addition of the X-600 to the Electron Parametrics family of telecoms test equipment provides a realistic, well-defined transmission channel for testing the performance of ADSL and other broadband modems, in both production and development environments.

Based on international standards, the X-600 can provide a wide range of user-selectable line lengths. This passive design allows the simultaneous operation of Broadband and POTS (Plain Old Telephone Services), allowing a complete assessment of product performance to be made.

Overview

High-speed modems based on such technologies as ADSL represent the leading-edge of access technology over copper loop telephone lines. By using high power carriers, sensitive receivers and powerful DSP hardware and software, it is possible to transmit high bit-rate signals carrying video, data and speech applications. Additionally, it is a normally a requirement that the established conventional telephone services can operate as normal, at the same time, on the same line.

The maximum speed of data that ADSL modems can work at, is primarily set by the characteristics and length of the line, over which the data is sent. As the attenuation in these lines increases, the data throughput will be correspondingly reduced.

Designers and specifiers of ADSL modems will need to be able assess the performance of modems under well-defined conditions.

Manufacturers will need to test products, to ensure that the critical circuitry will operate as the designer intended.

The X-600 has been designed as a low-cost, portable unit suitable for both product evaluation testing and production testing. It is based on international standards and is a completely passive design to give a low-noise solution capable of carrying the feed voltages, currents and signalling which are present in the POTS channel.

A port is also provided for the introduction of well-defined impairments such as white noise.
